Welcome to Tech!
Moving to a new home can be quite stressful. That's why the Wreck Techs will be in residence halls during move-in to help students get set up with all of Georgia Tech's technology services (wired and wireless internet, printers, gaming devices, and cable TV). We will be walking through the halls knocking on doors and offering one-on-one in-room assistance. Please watch for our posters in the residence halls detailing the times we will be in each building or check the schedule below. If we missed you, feel free to give us a call at 404-894-0044 or stop by one of our office locations for assistance.
What to bring?
Every student at Tech is required to have a personal laptop computer. Certain majors or departments may have more specific requirements, but the Institute-required minimums may be viewed at the Student Computer Ownership website.
25' CAT5e/CAT6 Ethernet Cable
Georgia Tech offers a "port-per-pillow" of full gigabit (1000 Mb/s) internet speeds in each room on campus. To maximize your speeds, we recommend using the wired network whenever possible. Since the location of the data port in rooms can vary in relation to the location of the desks, we recommend purchasing a 25' cable for the most flexibility.
USB3/Thunderbolt Ethernet Adapter
Many laptops, especially in recent years, no longer have integrated Ethernet adapters. So that you can benefit from the speeds of our wired network, we recommend purchasing a USB3 or Thunderbolt (for PC or Mac respectively) Ethernet adapter for use with your laptop. When purchasing, check to ensure that the adapter supports Gigabit speeds so that you are able to utilize the full network speeds offered by Georgia Tech.
Georgia Tech offers over 100 digital television channels (40+ in HD) to all housing residents. To enjoy these channels, you'll need a compatible television with a QAM tuner. Most televisions manufactured after 2008 have this tuner, though there are some exceptions. Visit our Television Compatibility page for more details on the required tuner as well as television models we have identified to not function on campus.
25' RG6 Quad-Shield Coaxial Cable
To receive channels on your television, you'll need a coaxial cable. Due to the high level of signal interference from nearby broadcasters, we highly recommend purchasing a quad-shielded RG6 coaxial cable. Lesser-shielded cables (such as dual-shield) are more susceptible to interference and may affect your ability to receive channels. We recommend purchasing a 25' cable for freshman dorms since the location of the cable jack on the wall can vary widely and may not be the most convenient location for placing a television very close by.
We love gamers! Students are encouraged to bring any game consoles they'd like to campus so that they can enjoy them in their downtime. Almost all popular game consoles can be connected to either our wired or wireless networks. We have a full list of supported game consoles and instructions for connecting them in our Game Consoles section of our website.
What not to bring?
CRT televisions are not compatible with the all-digital cable television network on Georgia Tech's campus and will not be able to receive channels. This is because most, if not all, have only analog (NTSC) tuners rather than the required QAM digital tuner. You can read more about the necessary tuner to receive channels on our Television Compatibility page.
Thinking of bringing a wireless printer to your dorm room? No need! Georgia Tech offers a free printing balance to all students which may be used at any of the printing stations around campus. Several of these stations are located conveniently in each residential community (East Campus, West Campus, North Ave, 10th & Home/GLC) for easy printing whenever needed. Students can print to these printers from their laptop wirelessly after installing a small software package from OIT. More information on printing locations, software, and associated costs may be found on our Printers page as well on the Library's website.
